    ENA as an Information Hub

    The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA; "http://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/":http://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/) is a comprehensive repository for public nucleotide sequence data from nearly four hundred thousand taxonomic nodes. Together with partners in the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC; EBI, NCBI and DDBJ) we provide a broad spectrum of sequences, from raw reads (Sequence Read Archive data class), assembled contigs (Whole Genome Shotgun data class), assemblies of EST transcripts (Transcriptome Shotgun Assembly data set), to partial or complete assembled nucleic acid molecules with functional annotation derived from direct and third party experimental evidence (Standard and TPA data classes, respectively). Resources beyond ENA, such as RNA and protein databases, genome collections and model organism services, use data stored and presented at ENA as both source and underlying supporting evidence for their records. Integration of the growing wealth of molecular information is a great challenge that brings opportunities for ENA to serve as a bioinformatics data information hub, allowing, through its provision of permanent identifiers for sequence and project records, community-recognized identifiers for navigation across databases.

As a comprehensive repository of directly sequenced nucleic acid molecules we have the unique opportunity to obtain exact provenance information directly from the submitting researchers. Our pre-publication biocuration efforts are focused on obtaining rich and accurate information on the sample that has been sequenced and on the methodology surrounding its preparation for sequencing. We present here an insight into data flow in the archive and a straightforward biologist-orientated submission system with a rule-based validator for smaller sets of sequences

    Overview of Spirit Microscopic Imager Results

    This paper provides an overview of Mars Exploration Rover Spirit Microscopic Imager (MI) operations and the calibration, processing, and analysis of MI data. The focus of this overview is on the last five Earth years (2005-2010) of Spirit's mission in Gusev crater, supplementing the previous overview of the first 450 sols of the Spirit MI investigation. Updates to radiometric calibration using in-flight data and improvements in high-level processing are summarized. Released data products are described, and a table of MI observations, including target/feature names and associated data sets, is appended. The MI observed natural and disturbed exposures of rocks and soils as well as magnets and other rover hardware. These hand-lens-scale observations have provided key constraints on interpretations of the formation and geologic history of features, rocks, and soils examined by Spirit. MI images complement observations by other Spirit instruments, and together show that impact and volcanic processes have dominated the origin and evolution of the rocks in Gusev crater, with aqueous activity indicated by the presence of silica-rich rocks and sulfate-rich soils. The textures of some of the silica-rich rocks are similar to terrestrial hot spring deposits, and observations of subsurface cemented layers indicate recent aqueous mobilization of sulfates in places. Wind action has recently modified soils and abraded many of the rocks imaged by the MI, as observed at other Mars landing sites. Plain Language Summary The Microscopic Imager (MI) on NASA's Spirit rover returned the highest-resolution images of the Martian surface available at the time of the 2004-2010 mission. Designed to survive 90 Mars days (sols) and search for evidence of water in the past, Spirit returned data for 2210 sols, far exceeding all expectations. This paper summarizes the scientific insights gleaned from the thousands of MI images acquired during the last 5years of the mission, supplementing the summary of the first 450 sols of the Spirit MI investigation published previously (Herkenhoff et al., ). Along with data from the other instruments on Spirit, MI images guided the scientific interpretation of the geologic history of the rocks and soils observed in Gusev crater on Mars. We conclude that the geologic history of the area explored by Spirit has been dominated by impacts and volcanism, and that water, perhaps very hot water, was involved in the evolution of some of the rocks and soils. More recently, winds have moved soil particles and abraded rocks, as observed elsewhere on Mars. It provides a quasi-verbatim transcript of an interview with Nick Pidgeon, one of the main contributors to the social science component of The Royal Society Risk Report (1992). The interview contains a fascinating insider account of the debate about risk between engineers and social scientists who produced the report.     Iceberg model of violence as a contiuum to improve efforts to reduce workplace violence and burnout of healthcare providers

    World Health Organization (WHO) classification of violence includes sexual, physical, psychological and deprivation as the four modes of infliction of violence. WHO defines violence as "The intentional use of physical force or power threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. Galtung's central premise as a peace researcher is that violence is due to an avoidable impairment of the fundamental human need groups of survival, wellbeing, identity/purpose, and freedom. Some of the categories and examples are generally accepted by law or society as "violence" while others are less uniformly accepted as forms of "violence" by the general public.     Reducing workplace violence by creating healthy workplace environments

    Purpose: The purpose for writing this paper is to help develop and apply integrated models and methods of best practice that can prevent and manage workplace incivility (WPI) and workplace violence (WPV). Design/methodology/approach: This approach uses the framework of the public health model to integrate neurobiological, behavioural, organisational, mental health, and educational theory into a holistic framework for the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of WPV. The key concepts built into this model are those of organisational violence (OV), trauma-informed services, and positive behaviour support (PBS). This approach is further illustrated by case studies from organisations that have successfully implemented safety protocols that demonstrate the effectiveness of such an integrated approach. This method is derived primarily from qualitative data based on the expertise and experience of the authors in the areas of psychiatry, social work research, and instructional implementation as well as reviews of the current literature. Findings: This model suggests that understanding WPI and violence as reactions to a combination of internal and external stressors is key to interrupting these violent responses. Responding to WPV requires that organisations first take responsibility for their own role in generating WPV and recognize the impact of organisationally generated trauma on staff and services users. In this behavioural model, WPV and WPI have functions which require the teaching of replacement behaviours that help individuals to escape from these stresses in ways that do not cause harm to themselves and/or others. Thus, management must instruct staff how to teach and reinforce appropriate social and communicative behaviours in order to replace those behaviours leading to WPV and WPI. Practical implications: The practical implications of this paper are that it provides human service practitioners with: an understanding of the functions of reactive violence at work; a methodology to identify different types WPI and WPV; a framework to proactively teach violence replacement behaviours, empowering people to address the causative factors in ways that do not cause harm to self and/or others; skills that can be taught to management and staff individually or in group settings, as well as to service users; and implementation models from various organisations that have achieved significant reductions in WPV. Another important outcome demonstrated through the case studies is that significant financial savings can be achieved through reduction of WPI and WPV which may in turn lead to a related improvement in the quality of life for staff and service users through changes in workplace practices. This outcome has implications for organisational practice and theory as well as human services education and training. Social implications: One key social implication of the model, if integrated into the company's social responsibility policies and practices, is the potential for improving the quality of life for staff and patients in health care settings as well as employees, customers, and service users in other settings. Originality/value: The originality shown in this paper is the way the three key concepts of OV, trauma-informed services, and PBS are built into a public health model to prevent and mitigate WPV. This paper is of particular value to boards of management, organisational directors, supervisors, HR and training departments as well as direct care staff, service providers, and regulatory bodies

    Translational models of workplace violence in health care

    Decision makers have little time to study literature on the prevention and management of workplace violence (WPV). In a health care workplace setting, identifying the person, stimulus, and environmental interactions that can lead to violence is a complicated process. Those in positions of leadership make decisions that affect many individuals, agencies, and communities. Often, they come from different professional backgrounds yet need ways of rapidly understanding concepts of violence that transcend their profession, training, or experience. Translational models (TMs) in WPV visually summarize and interprofessionally facilitate this understanding of concepts, enhancing the chances of more effective collaborative solutions to WPV. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how TM can be used in interprofessional settings to find effective solutions to reduce WPV
